The Stillspotting concept is the brainchild of the Guggenheim Museum's Asst Curator David Van Der Leer. Stillspotting will provide New Yorkers the rare opportunity of encountering moments of stillness, still spots, in their hectic city lives.

Five artists were selected, each assigned a borough of New York in which to display their work.  For the first site, Brooklyn, Van Der Leer chose the wonderfully playful and brilliantly ingenious Mexican artist Pedro Reyes. Knowing New Yorkers fascination with therapies of all kinds Pedro Reyes created The Sanatorium in which visitors could try a host of therapies to evoke their own stillness. Visitors could choose from a mixture of whimsical and semi-serious therapies, e.g. The Tuning Effect™, laughter, sand play, hypnosis and others.

Pedro Reyes and Mel Kimura Bucholtz met in Cambridge, Mass in 2006 where Pedro experienced The Tuning Effect™ for rapidly achieving a state of calmness.

During the 8 day Sanatorium Art Project more than 400 visitors experienced the Tuning Effect™. A survey before and after was conducted evaluating the impact of the Tuning Effect. Please click here to read the details of this survey.
